Sir Edmund Percival Hillary, KG, ONZ, KBE (20 July 1919 – 11 January 2008) was a New Zealand mountaineer and explorer. On 29 May 1953 at the age of 33, he and Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay became the first climbers known to have reached the summit of Mount Everest. They were part of the ninth British expedition to Everest, led by John Hunt. He was named by Time magazine as onehillary of 100 most influential people of the 20th century.

Hillary became interested in mountaineering while in secondary school, making his first major climb in 1939, reaching the summit of Mount Ollivier. He served in the RNZAF as a navigator during World War II. Before the successful expedition in 1953 to Everest, he had been part of a reconnaissance expedition to the mountain in 1951 and an unsuccessful attempt to climb Cho Oyu in 1952. As part of the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition he reached the South Pole overland in 1958. He would later also travel to the North Pole.

Following his ascent of Everest he devoted much of his life to helping the Sherpa people of Nepal through the Himalayan Trust, which he founded. Through his efforts many schools and hospitals were built in this remote region of Nepal.

CANOE SLALOM

Canoe Slalom North Island Championships
Leading up to the New Zealand Secondary Schools and Open Nationals in the South Island later this term, Tauranga Boys’ College dominated this year’s North Island Canoe Slalom Championship event once again. The races were held on the Tarawera River, which runs through the Kawerau Township. This course has had some major site developments by the local council, so that spectators can view all the action along walkways and added excellent seating next to the best vantage points. One hour before the competition the course was set up by a French coach currently training our NZ elite paddlers, which includes Callum Gibb from Tauranga Boys’ College. Each paddler then has two runs in each category to record the fastest time. They must negotiate a mix of 18 upstream and down stream gates to complete the course. If they touch a gate they incur a two second penalty and if they miss the gate altogether they have 50 seconds added to their time.

This year’s course was difficult for our juniors compared to what they can expect at the Secondary Schools in Dunedin later this term and some took an untimely swim half way down the course and did not finish the race. However our more experienced paddlers reveled in the whitewater conditions to post some very quick times. With electronic timing set up, many places were settled with margins as small as 0.01 of a second and in other races the winner was well ahead of the next place getter. This was not the case with Andre Sperling, who at just 14 years old took out the hotly contested U16 K1 title by over 12 seconds and coming in just one second behind the fastest U18 K1 paddler Callum Gibb.
Dunstan High School (co-ed school from the South Island) possess the biggest threat this year at the NZ Secondary Schools Championships, with a large contingent of paddlers expected to compete in both boys and girls events. Thus it will take a huge effort for the Tauranga Boys’ College team to win the overall Top Kayaking School for a record 13th time in a row, as points are awarded for the top three places in each category for boys and girls and we only compete in the boys events.

Vs Central Premiers
TBC A Carter S McCarthy R McBrydie
178 all out 45 not out 35 25
Central Premiers 98 all out C Thomas 5/8 B Hampton 2/31
Tauranga Boys’ College lost the toss and was sent into bat first. Once again, Shaun McCarthy proved he was more than capable at this level getting the innings off to a positive start. Unfortunately the middle order failed to fire and it was left up to the lower order to get the score through to a defendable total. Batting at number 8 Andrew Carter batted superbly well to top score with 45 not out.
In reply, some tight TBC bowling and fielding meant that Central could only muster 98 all out. Campbell Thomas was particularly impressive returning the figures of 5/8 off six overs. This was a pleasing result after the disappointing effort against Rotorua Boys’ High School the previous week.

2nd XI Vs Katikati College
A great result for the 2nds on Saturday upsetting competition leaders Katikati. The 2nds were missing eight regular players and were fighting an uphill battle just to field a side. However a very young team managed to bowl Katikati out for just 124. Myles Timoti and Gupreet Singh took three wickets each. We then chased down the runs with three wickets to spare.
In Sunday’s game which was a McNaughton Cup semi-final, the boys were rolled for a very modest 110. However the boys picked up their heads and in the end just lost to Central from Rotorua. Central finally won with only two wickets in hand. Shaun McCarthy took three wickets in one over to give the boys some hope.

TBC SWIMMING SPORTS

This year’s school swimming sports was the largest in recent history with over 850 boys competing and participating at Memorial Pool on Wednesday 24th February. The competitive swimmers kicked things off with the 200m open freestyle. Recognisable by the colour swim cap they were wearing, the poolside crowds were able to cheer on their house team mates.
The morning programme included both competitive and participation events. The marshalling area was a hive of activity as house leaders body marked each year 9 student as they got ready for their race. Ngata house looked like the team to beat as they were pumping through more swimmers than any other house. However, the competitive placings seemed to be mostly dominated by the familiar black and yellow caps of Halberg and Hillary. The boys finished the morning with a year 9 relay followed by a tasty BBQ before heading back to school for the afternoon.
The year 10’s arrived shortly after lunch with the house competition
still up in the air. As they worked their way through the 1 length freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke it again looked like a few of the houses had their troops revved up more than others. The day finished as it had started, with lots of energy and excitement around who would take out house honours.
A big thank you to all students and staff who participated in the running of the day. Congratulations to the winning house and individual swimming champions for 2010.

Monday continued in the same vein, with two close doubles matches. Nick Brown and Josh White combined well to take out the top doubles. In reverse singles the TBC team played with intensity, securing five of the six matches, with wins going to Brown, Carey, Fox, Newman and Sam Currie.

VOLLEYBALL

Senior A
Thursday Night Competition
We played Otumoetai A and won 3-0. We had a slow start but picked it up as the game went on.
BOP Secondary School Competition
Saturday – In the first game we played Western Heights High School and had a convincing win over them 3-0, with one set keeping them under 10 points.
The second game was against Trident A, our toughest opponents in the tournament. At the end of the third set, we were up 2-1. We had a match point in the 4th set at 24-22, and ended up losing 26-24. We then unfortunately lost the 5th set, losing the game. A very disappointing result, as we were so close to winning but something which we can learn a lot from.
Sunday – we played Otumoetai A and Trident B, winning both 3-0, and finishing our first preliminary
tournament on a high. Tauranga Boys’ College 6
Tauranga Boys’ College 6 played against a mixed team of other Tauranga Boy’s College players, winning a set each with the final score 63-58 to TBC6. Not a bad game from our boys considering only three players have really played before (Liam Kinzett, Tyler Jones and Anthony Riley).
Player of the day was Tyler Jones
Tauranga Boys’ College 1
TBC 1 played Mount Maunganui College 1 in the Tuesday night competition last week. The boys started off a bit rusty but by the second set were playing well with good setting and spiking. The final score was 64-52 to us. The player of the day was Mac Christie as he spiked and chased the ball well.
Tauranga Boys’ College 2
Opponents were Tauranga Boys’ College 3. The result was a win to TBC2, 63 -56. Player of the Day went to Caleb Simmons.
Good serving by Burton McAdam and Joseph Winstanley and some good kills by Brad Fullerton and Caleb Simmons.

CANOE SLALOM

World Ranking and Oceania Championships Australia
Three of our students travelled to the Penrith Olympic course in Sydney over the last couple of weeks to compete against the worlds best kayakers. Callum Gibb was placed 49th and Carl Whitehead 67th in the Men’s Open K1 with Haven Bellamy 32nd in the Men’s Open C1.
As part of the competition the Oceania Championships had the best of the New Zealand and Australian Under 18 paddlers compete against each other. The NZ juniors showed their potential with Callum Gibb heading off all the Australian juniors to win the K1 with Carl Whitehead in 4th and Haven Bellamy winning the C1 event.
Bay of Plenty Canoe Slalom Champs
This took place on the Kaituna River where our College paddlers moved another step closer to the North Island and National events later this term. Tauranga Boys’ College paddlers were out in force once again showing how difficult it is for other schools to have paddlers with the ability to enter at this level. The dreaded “Shoot” rapid half way down the course was again the best place to watch the carnage as paddlers were thrown around like rag dolls in the current and unpredictable boils surging up without warning. Junior coach Paul Ferris and teacher-in- charge of kayaking at TBC Rob Sperling were busy all day as rescue boaters for those paddlers who could not handle the conditions.
The main Tauranga Boys’ College results were: points.

CRICKET 1st XI

Batting first Tauranga Boys’ College put together a formidable 321/5 from their 50 overs. A rapid opening stand of 59 from youngster Shaun McCarthy and Joe Carter got the innings off to a great start. Carter played a magnificent innings and recorded his first century for the 1st XI in scoring 102. Gareth Osmond (43), Nick Evemy (38) and Brett Hampton (33) all featured in healthy partnerships and the TBC innings maintained the early tempo set in the opening stand.

In reply Te Puke were struggling at 60/4 before a fruitful fifth wicket stand of 85 got them back on track. Brett Hampton ended with the figures of 3/47 from 10, Sean Davey 2/25 off 8 and man-of-the- match Joe Carter chimed in with 2/8 off 3 overs. Te Puke were never in the hunt and were dismissed for 178.

Beach Volleyball

Last weekend 30 boys boarded a bus bound for Gisborne and the NZSS Beach Volleyball champs. Saturday provided testing conditions with strong winds and dust blowing down the junior boys courts. At the end of pool play TBC had four teams in the quarter finals. Congratulations to Connor Bell /Justin Sargent-Clarke and Matthew Kilpatrick/ Burton McAdam who won their quarter finals to advance to the semis.
Connor and Justin played the Westlake Boys’ High School duo and in a tough fought match went down. Mat and Burt played the Otumoetai duo of Clague and Gilling and in a tight match came out the victors.
The final versus Westlake Boys’ High School was won by Burt and Mat in two sets. A fantastic result and their first NZ title.
In the senior event TBC managed to get three teams into the quarter finals. In one quarter final Matt Sargent-Clarke/Jeff Thwaites defeated George McAdam/Mitch Zandstra and in another quarter final Sonny Hirini/Jared Rona defeated Otumoetai.
In the semi finals Jeff and Matt lost a tight three setter to Orewa College and Sonny and Jared won a great three setter against the Trident team that contained two NZL players.
The final was a point for point battle and strong serving by Sonny and a great side-out game by Jared saw them finally dominate the 3rd set and take out the NZSS Senior Title. Needless to say the bus ride home was a great trip.

CRICKET 1st XI

Whakatane United batting first put together 193. R McBrydie 2/20 S Sievwright 3/23
In reply TBC could only muster 120. S Sievwright 33, R McBrydie 18.

2nd XI

The boys had two great wins in the weekend. Firstly on Saturday in a Baywide club match against Albion Samra, the boys batted first and made an average 170 runs all out. Most of the team chipped in with scores of twenty and thirty. They then managed to roll Albion for a poultry 36 runs. Some good swing bowling from Tommy Clout and Morgan Bidois had the opposition in trouble early. Nick Leggett then finished them off taking the last two wickets in his only over of the day. It was a fantastic effort with rain constantly threatening to take the game away from us.
Sunday saw us playing in our final pool match of the McNaughton trophy. With a comprehensive win over last years winners Cadets, the boys wanted to prove it was no fluke. Bowling Mount out for 120 was half the job done. Again wickets were shared around, however Nick Leggett was the pick of the bowlers finishing with figures of 4–14 off his max eight overs.
Shaun McCarthy and Gurpreet Singh then took control with the bat and chased down the meagre total with seven wickets to spare. McCarthy ended up with 64 not-out, while Singh had his second 31 not-out in as many weeks. The boys are now through to the semi-finals that will be played at the start of March.
The 2nd XI are unbeaten this year.
