On Good Friday our Big Band played, competing against 11 other Big Bands from around the country. After a superb performance the boys were awarded both a Gold award and the highest honor for their section – “Best Big Band”, with the “New Orleans trophy”. This is the seventh time the Tauranga Boysʼ College Big Band has won this trophy in the past 30 years. It has been 6 years since we last won this section, so this is cause for celebration!
On Saturday, we had 2 combos competing. The TBC Combo (Adam Staples, Cody Mitchell, Edward Linton, Andrew Robinson, Daniel Wessels, Max Bellamy, Cameron Buchanan and Ben Guernier) came away with a Silver Award – an excellent effort for having only been together as a group since early this term!
The T Jazz Collective (Eric Begley, Kelly Ballard, Daniel Kulasingham, Leilani Taula and Abbie Smith) are a combined TBC/TGC group which performed exceptionally well. They were awarded the top honour of “Best in Festival”, along with “Most Innovative Group”.
.
Kelly Ballard was awarded “Best Drummer” (2nd year running), Eric Begley was awarded “Best Clarinetist” (3rd year running) and Leilani was awarded “Best Vocalist”.
Overall, we have had a hugely successful Jazz Festival, and we are incredibly proud of these young men.
Thanks to all staff and parents who came down to Baycourt to support the boys. Also, huge thanks must go of course to John Page, Murray Mason and Chris Williamson for the considerable time and effort they have put in to these groups.
